String Along

Quietsch

This film from future shorts shares similar concepts and ideas i've considered in my treatment. The beginning with the ring leader resembles my vision of the woman in her abstract world, a black empty space where she is the focus. The use of spilt screens is also something i've considered, and the way the childrens movements become synced in parts is how i imagined my date screen to be, with the different men all doing similar actions with the woman. This has been a good reference to help me understand how i can create and organise my vision for the film.

Chinese concept ~ The Red String of Fate

The Red String of Fate is a popular myth in both Chinese and Japanese culture.

Its the idea that theres an invisible 'Red String' which is tyed to our little fingers or ankles, which connect us to our soulmates.

The Folklore for the Chienese concept, where it is most likely to have originated is...

'The story involves a young boy. Walking home one night, a young boy sees an old man standing beneath the moonlight. The man explains to the boy that he is attached to his destined wife by a red thread. He shows the boy the young girl who is destined to be his wife. Being young and having no interest in having a wife, the young boy picks up a rock and throws it at the girl, running away. Many years later, when the boy has grown into a young man, his parents arrange a wedding for him. On the night of his wedding, his wife waits for him in their bedroom, with the traditional veil covering her face. Raising it, the man is delighted to find that his wife is one of the great beauties of his village. However, she wears an adornment on her eyebrow. He asks her why she wears it and she responds that when she was a young girl, a boy threw a rock at her that struck her, leaving a scar on her eyebrow. She self consciously wears the adornment to cover it up. The woman is, in fact, the same young girl connected to the man by the red thread shown to him by the old man back in his childhood'.

This idea has been re-represented in many ways through both Chinese and Japanese media, along with popular culture all over the world.

Red String of Fate

For the idea of my first Treatment which i presented to the group, I've looked further into my idea of the red strings of fate to show the woman's connection the the men she's cheating on.

This video uses the idea of how the string works, and plays heavily on the 'fate' idea, as he saves the girl from the truck. This could be in interesting concept to include in my story, as we can use the idea of foreboding that the strings show her fate, rather than connection.

This video is another representation to the red string of fate, and how two people follow theirs together, but when they reach the end they're not fated to each other, but decide they would rather ignore the string, and stay together. I liked this take on the idea as it showed that the strings arent set, and dont have to be followed. Perhaps sometimes a perfect relationship isnt a relationship at all, and i'd like the maybe experiment with this idea by showing how the men choose to ignore the strings to the woman.Leaving her.

I had more inspiration from an episode of animated series i watched called XXX Holic, in this episode a woman with many boyfriends begins to feel ill from the lies she tells. By making a pinky promise and lying she slowly becomes so tangled in the strings of fate she cant move her little finger. This idea has had the most impact on my story, it's where my idea sprouted from, as i remebered the story from watching it some time ago.

Black Swan

The Black swan has been released at various film festivals over the world and had great success. By Director Darren Aronofsky it's a close idea to what we want in our film. It has thriller elements to the story through the fantasy visions.
It uses themes of rivalry, romance, ambition and psychological thriller. Because of our abstract world it would be interesting to analyse this to understand what we can achieve. There are scenes in the film, which involves the manipulation of mirrors and gives my the sense of an always hidden agenda, hidden side to her personality. Similar themes to our film.

Note on a Scandal

Notes on a Scandal was released in 2007, by Director Richard Eyre. Its the story of an affair between a young art teacher, and her 15 year old student. Which is discovered by an older teacher who has befriended her. The scandal is then used to for the older teacher to control and have power over the younger. Again these show similar themes of betrayal, drama and thriller aspects. An ominous feeling we want to give our audience when watching Delilahs fall.

Unfaithful

Directed by Adrian Lyne, the drama is a key aspect to this film. Its very strong throughout the film and where the film lacks a moral teaching, the drama keeps it fast paced and enthralling. This idea of the fast paced, quick cut story appeals to our story because of the themes. We see her play between the two men, and although her motives are different we see how she slowly becomes discovered.

The Cheating Woman

When researching to develop a better understanding of Delilah's motives for cheating, i came across some interesting perspectives and ideas from peoples experiences. It can be a delicate subject and there are many stories behind a cheater. From this i hope to understand what Delilah wants from cheating.

'Forbidden fruit seems so much sweeter'.

This statement really stood out to me, to consider a motive as just the temptation to do what were not supposed to? Which lets be honest is a very human urge.

This article talks about two different women who have cheated, both stories express there ideas why they cheated. However the ideas of neglect and a breaking down relationship just dont fit to Delilah, and her confident personality. However the first line stood out to me.

"Why I Cheated" — Women Fess Up

http://lifestyle.msn.com/relationships/articlematch.aspx?cp-documentid=8424972

In this article, women give there personal reasons and ideas as to why they cheat. It suggests some interesting concepts from lack of passion, long distance to lack of things in common, While these are all realistic reasons for a cheating woman, i personally feel its just not Delilah.

Even from my better understand of personal cheating experiences i still feel Delilah's main motive for cheating is her pure need for attention and power. As a believable person she craves male attention, and enjoys her power over men. Which she then uses to her full advantage. I think its nescessary to show this sinister side of her to fit with our idea of the Abstract world. Also i feel by doing this we'll have a bigger impact on our audience when she's left alone. We can understand her sadness more because she's lost the attention she feeds on.

Ancillary Poster 3

For my last poster in the campaign I've used a poster more suitable for a magazine advert. The layout was based on the 500 Days of Summer poster i researched. I felt for a magazine addition i needed a more contemporary layout, as it would be mostly viewed by our female target audience. There is a matching house style to the others, however it differs as a less vintage inspired poster. The font is all white as i felt the red was too strong on the pink banners. This poster also uses a clearer image in relation to the storyline, as i felt that more mainstream audiences will need a clearer understanding of the films story, as with Delilah in the mirror and the two photo's next to it, it suggests a story of a woman's romance between to men. I also used an image of the fortune as opposed to having the tag line in text. I felt this complimented the post well as it does in the 500 Days poster, with the banners in place using a text tag line would have been to plain.

Ancillary Poster 2

For my second poster this is aimed at a billboard or cinema poster layout. It's inspired by a fusion of 500 Days of Summer and The Cat on the Tin Roof. The image i used is from a photo shot of Delilahs character, with a similar pose to that of Elizabeth Taylor and Zooey Deschanel on the other posters, to portray her as the strong, sensual woman. It uses a tag line from the fortune in the film, to still represent the strings of fate, and uses the house style font from before, with an alteration of full bold font. Which i decided to do based on visibility on a billboard.

Ancillary Poster 1

As my first poster in the campaign, I've used a image from the abstract world. After looking at poster such as Clockwork Orange, Vaduva Neagra and The Great Gatsby I've attempted to create a mix of there styles to create a poster that both film enthusiasts and women will be attracted to. Although this poster leans toward a more artist one from the use of the image with the red string. However the arrangement and layout was heavily influenced by The Great Gatsby, i felt this way it was more inviting to a female audience as well. I added elements such as the reviews and ratings to further appeal to a film knowledgeable audience, and the tag line is from a draft of our fortunes we created. To further link to the Chinese theme of fate.
I choose the colour scheme based on the prominent colours of our film, and based on the vintage schemes. This give the poster a sense of the drama and romance genres and not creating to much of a dark and mysterious impression.

Ancillary Reviews ~ Film Magazine Process

These screenshots are the process of creating my review, and how i adapted the layout to resemble Empire magazines reviews, it wasn't difficult recreating Empires house style, although i experimented at first.

We haven't decided on an official name for our film yet, so as a group we've been experimenting with different titles to see what fits to our film. So you may see variations for names throughout my drafts.

Ancillary Reviews ~ Final Film Magazine

Ancillary Reviews ~ Research

Empire Reviews

Empire Magazine is a media magazine that reviews and presents articles about film, games, music, dvds etc.

From looking at Empires review pages, I've analysed a house style and layout which I can recreate for my own film reviews appearance in Empire magazine.

The set and layout involves the 'main feature' which is usually a blockbuster status film, with 3 or 4 smaller film reviews below. With an image for each for easy relation for readers.
The review itself is in-depth, referring to common film knowledge and lingo, while making comparisons to similar films or stories. The language is clearly targeted at film enthusiasts and those with interest in the industry, which is what I'll aim to do in my own review, perhaps by using film terms and expressing an understanding myself through the review.

This type of reviewing style I feel suits our film better, with it being a more visual and representing independent film. Empire review these based on themes, most reviews with the main feature at the top, and the others below are linked by the same or similar genres and themes.

Ancillary Poster Research

For our first Ancillary task we're creating 3 posters as part of our films campaign. Researching for poster art, I'm gathering ideas of how i can present my posters, and the conventions of different poster types.

My first look into poster styles is based on a vintage look, i felt for a silent film perhaps a more classic style can act as a homage to early cinema.I've looked at mostly drama or book based films, with some more abstract and creative film genres. This way i can experiment with showing the two sides of my film.

Clockwork Orange is a classic film, with the wacky and disturbing world in it. This poster uses a very creative way of presenting the themes of 'abstract'. It has a clean, white backdrop, with the main image drawing all the attention, the font and arrangement are both very iconic, looking at this example, i can pay close attention to my own use of arrangement to make my poster image unforgettable.

This poster, of a foreign film 'vaduva neagra' has a very stand out design. The image of the lips with the spider legs suggest a woman who is not all she seems to be, an idea that can be used in poster. Its an interesting way of depicting a drama genre with possible thriller. These two posters however more aimed at a film enthusiast audience as they focus more on the art than advertising the film. I would like to include one poster with a more vintage, artist style in the campaign, to be aimed at a film enthusiast audience.

Cat on the tin roof, another vintage film, does well to establish the main character, with hints at the story. One of my main objectives is to portray the power of the woman (Delilah) in the campaign, which we see used in this poster, with Elizabeth Taylor's character seen as a powerful, sensual woman. I've also noticed a pattern or convention in vintage posters based on drama and romance genre's. The font is usually bold, with a red and black outline style. This design would also easily suit my film, and i may use it.

The Great Gatsby! one of my favourite novels and film adaptations.Once again a film poster which suggests drama and romantic themes in the story. The use of the couple in a dramatic pose hint at the scandal to come. This also uses the red and black font as with Cat on the tin roof, and this poster is my favourite out of my research, its clear to the genre, but also leaves mystery into the story.

The details of director, production company etc. are in a subtle arrangement, so the main focus is on the images, but its still included. This is something i would like to re create in my poster. Also despite being a vintage poster, this is open to and will easily attract a female target audience because of the strong themes. This helps me in developing a poster which will both appeal to film enthusiasts and young women, who are most likely to enjoy our film.

For a more comtempary poster i've researched into 500 Days Of Summer, a film that has been a big inspiration to our film, and has had great sucess at both film festivals and in the cinema. This poster focuses on summer, just how i want to focus on Delilah and uses a strong poster layout for the target audience. This is a good reference for me when doing a poster for cinemas and magazines.

Making the Fortune Cookies?

As where unsure of using a pre made fortune cookie, I've looked into recipes i can try

Fortune cookies can be tricky to make - it's important to make sure that the cookie batter is spread out evenly on the baking sheet. Instead of using the back of a wooden spoon to spread the batter, it's better to gently tilt the baking sheet back and forth as needed. Wearing cotton gloves makes it easier to handle and shape the hot cookies. This fortune cookie recipe makes about 10 cookies.
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 30 minutes
Ingredients:

* 2 large egg whites
* 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
* 1/2 teaspoon pure almond extract
* 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
* 8 tablespoons all-purpose flour
* 1 1/2 teaspoons cornstarch
* 1/4 teaspoon salt
* 8 tablespoons granulated sugar
* 3 teaspoons water

Preparation:
1. Write fortunes on pieces of paper that are 3 1/2 inches long and 1/2 inch wide. Preheat oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease 2 9-X-13 inch baking sheets.

2. In a medium bowl, lightly beat the egg white, vanilla extract, almond extract and vegetable oil until frothy, but not stiff.

3. Sift the flour, cornstarch, salt and sugar into a separate bowl. Stir the water into the flour mixture.

4. Add the flour into the egg white mixture and stir until you have a smooth batter. The batter should not be runny, but should drop easily off a wooden spoon.
Note: if you want to dye the fortune cookies, add the food coloring at this point, stirring it into the batter. For example, I used 1/2 teaspoon green food coloring to make green fortune cookies.

5. Place level tablespoons of batter onto the cookie sheet, spacing them at least 3 inches apart. Gently tilt the baking sheet back and forth and from side to side so that each tablespoon of batter forms into a circle 4 inches in diameter.

6. Bake until the outer 1/2-inch of each cookie turns golden brown and they are easy to remove from the baking sheet with a spatula (14 - 15 minutes).

7. Working quickly, remove the cookie with a spatula and flip it over in your hand. Place a fortune in the middle of a cookie. To form the fortune cookie shape, fold the cookie in half, then gently pull the edges downward over the rim of a glass, wooden spoon or the edge of a muffin tin. Place the finished cookie in the cup of the muffin tin so that it keeps its shape. Continue with the rest of the cookies.

Note: If you haven't made this recipe before, you might want to check out my Top 9 Tips for Making Fortune Cookies.
Each serving includes (based on a total yield of 9 cookies):
Calories 93, 11 g Carbohydrates, 1 g Protein, 5 g total Fat, 1 g Saturated Fat, 0 mg Cholesterol, trace Fibre, 72 mg Sodium, 18 mg Potassium.

When also making our cookies, I prepared some fortunes for our cookie which we've considered using as tag lines too.
There all concentrated on the themes of the story, we looked at other fortunes to word our's in a mystic way.
With the red string created from the Chinese myth, we felt comfortable using references to it in the fortune.

Title Ideas and Experiments.

Noriane and I had a discussion about our titles today, and what our ideas were after her meeting with Stewart Connen, who's helping us to create our titles, and finding out what we can do with the software we have. After finding out our options i suggested this idea of falling fabric for our opening titles, something similar to what I've seen in Little Dragons music video of twice. After showing Noriane and her liking the idea she's taking our notes to Stewart to develop it further.

Photo StoryBoard

Because our storyboard was split into 3 main sections, for filming practicality, I've repeated the same for the photo story boards.

StoryBoards ~ Abstract Setting

StoryBoards - House setting

Location, Location, Location!

Our location for the film is a house. 72 Oulton Cresent.

Its a house being lent to us by a peer where we can film over the two filming days.

The house is the perfect setting for our film! With a young woman's room, which has a red, black and white colour scheme and props that fit Delilah's character perfectly. The room fits to our storyboard angles and idea's with some minor changes to the angles of the wardrobe scene. With the accompaniment of our props to the room the mise en scene will be well suited for our film.
The hallway and living room will also be easy to use for our camera placements and movements, while also giving us easily dressable settings to fit the date scene.
The location of the abstract scene will be in the media studio, which will give us the space to create our black backdrop with fabric and use the lighting available in the studio, which after testing will have a dramatic effect on the look of our scenes.

Location Reece

Weighing up the details, problems and risks we can prepare for using our location and work on the solutions we need to be confident on our filming days.

Casting

The casting for our film has been a difficult process. Without the ability to use any students within Barking Abbey, our search for a reliable friend who was comfortable with acting in our film was limited.

For our main character Delilah we needed a young woman, around 17 to 18 who would feel comfortable and look at ease in her scenes. Our film will depend on facial expression due to the absence of dialogue, if our Delilah can show confidence she'll if the role perfectly.
Because of this need for a complete understanding of the character we found that the other media students we could ask to audition for our film felt awkward and unenthusiact at performing the scenes in our film, which would be likely to show in our character. And unfortunately our other options were unable to give the time to the filming and production stages that we need for the film.

However, considering our need for Delilahs actor to have a full understanding of her actions, while feeling confident and sure of the acting with the rest of the cast, we decided I should play the role of Delilah. With our group of 5 we believe we can balance our roles so that i can participate in acting in the film and the production process. As i developed Delilahs character and the story I'm fully aware and comfortable with what i need to do for us to achieve the portrayal of Delilah how we want it. And being a maker of the film i can encourage my fellow cast into showing there roles to how we want.

How i perceive Delilahs character has been based off of various actresses and characters who i feel would be similar in how she moves and portrays herself.
Zooey Deschanel is an actress i have found to brilliantly play strong female characters. She uses her subtle style of facial expression and soft movements which emphasise her femininity, but she also creates an impression of confidence in her character, with a tendency to day dream.

Although this is a dance sequence, we can pay attention to her character Summer, from 500 days of summer, movements and expressions, they show a calm, confident woman with a fun attitude. Plus some of the moves resemble an almost controlling nature, like how they move each other around, or the sad face motion which then controls Tom into doing what she wants. This way we can see hints of a more serious matter, in her subtle, romantic gestures. This is the kind of actions we want for Delilah.

This commerical with Zooey's also focuses on Zooey's expressions and body language. Again its floaty and dream like, with shots of her gaze drifting up, much like we want to do in our film with the daydream. I can really get a clearer idea of how i should act as Delilah by watching Zooey's performances.

Although we have to remember Delilah has a vindictive side, and must show in the abstract scenes.
A great example i looked to when experimenting with how to show Delilah's secret side, which she hides from the men.The character Jessica from the TV series Heroes shows an evil side to a woman. Her movements and actions are stronger and seductive compared to her alter ego Nikki. This will be useful in how i can show Delilah in both the abstract and normal world. The way she is also shown in her own abstract world has helped me also. The way she looks to Nikki through the mirror, she's in control and her world is flexible to her, like how she also appears outside the mirror and in different reflections. This can help me have an idea how to act in the abstract world, the still posture, with soft movements and gestures. I can also look at Nikkis character for when Delilah loses control. We see her desparation when trapped in the mirror world, and unable to stop whats happening. Just like Delilah.

For the role of James we have Josh Freeland. We were thrilled to have Josh as a cast member as his a great friend, and a brilliant actor. After seeing him in various drama pieces were confident he'll bring his talent to the screen. He's very easy going and comfortable with our film and us as directors. He was our first choice when considering James actor, and luckily he was glad to help us. I imagined James character as a sweet guy. His romantic and a fool for love. Although his character traits aren't a focus in the film, and aren't exaggerated we can get the impression of his personality trough his actions, like the small kisses and his expressions throughout.
This is a role i think Josh will play well and hopefully have fun doing so,
When offering examples and references to Josh i used actor Micheal Cera.

Micheal Cera's played main roles in many teen romance films, but his acting style is subtle and realistic, with a sense of humour. His characters are how i imagine James, as more of a love struck fool who'll do anything for Delilah.

JUNO, Love from Cavatina_9 on Vimeo.

For David we've created a slightly suaver character, well show this by how he brings the flowers to Delilah, for Akin to play David we'd reffer a character or acting style similar to a Hugh Grant role, although his supposed to be suaver his still been tricked by Delilah, and has to have some sense of foolish blindness to believe her.

Who do you think you are playing at?

David

I was ready to take the next step with you!

Delilah

I can ex…explain

(this will not be heard)

Everything gets out of control, David spills the wine and leaves
James leaves stepping on the flowers on the floor

Abstract

See broken string all over the floor (Delilah has lost control) surround Delilah
Delilah closes her eyes (camera blackout)

Shot of the window in the bedroom, camera pans down to the bed where Delilah is sleeping, the bed looks very messy and all Delilah’s makeup is smudged

Alarm goes off
Delilah grabs alarm and throws it to the wall (camera follows the alarm being thrown), camera is slowly panning back to the bed. Whilst panning we see the photos of the two men on the dressing table and they are crossed off, and we also see dead flowers on the dressing table and all her make up is all over the place and it is very messy.
When camera goes back to Delilah she is slowly getting up, there is a close up of her feet and near them are her red slippers, she pushes them to one side and she just falls back in bed.

Abstract

In the same position as she was in the real world, Delilah is surrounded by strings.

MoodBoard

For my mood board i thought I'd present it a little differently. I used red string to create the tangled effect against a backdrop, i then used various objects and images to depict the themes of my film.

The Chinese lantern, is a reference to the origins of our red string concept, coming from Chinese foke lore, i also wish to include this visually in the film with use of the Chinese meal and the fortune cookie.

The paper chain men, depict a girl in the middle of two boys, relating to the characters and there relationship.

The girl in the mirror is an idea of how we'll show Delilahs vanity and how we can shot her scenes in front of the mirrors.

The crossed fingers behind the back are to show her lies, and the hand heavily relates to the idea of the string coming from her fingers.

The lips with the lipstick is a very sensual shot we also what to achieve in scene one.

The screenshot of '500 days of Summer' is of a sequence which shows 'expectations' and 'reality' at the same time, a concept we've developed in our film.

The small voodoo doll is to represent Delilahs control, and her evil plans to control the men how she pleases.

The images of the red neck ribbon, the rose and the bed sheets are all linked to the idea of the men, the bedsheets from the daydream, and her physical relationship with them. Also the roses or flowers which will be a gift from one of the men to Delilah. And the ribbon to suggest further the idea of the red string, and how its round her neck, almost like a noose, forebodes her fall in the end.

Script ~ Draft 1

(Noriane and I developed a script draft together of our film, we will then compare this to Edward and Esma's interpretation of the script and create a final version as a group).

Idea's for presenting our character

This scene from 'I am Love' an Italian film, presents some aspects we've considered using to present Delilah in the first scene. The close up's of the woman's face and features gives a sensual atmosphere while she is seduced by the food. This, coupled with her costume and make up show her as a glamorous woman and suggest her as even more promiscuous, with the colours such as the red.

It also uses different focuses of her hands and movements while eating the food. Similar to how we would like to show Delilah moving around her vanity and room, applying make up and using the props in the set.

Charcter Profile ~ 'Woman', 'Delilah'

Delilah is our main character of the film, the 'Woman' who is cheating on the male characters. She's always craved attention and gains it through seeing her string of lovers. We called her Delilah because we felt she conducts herself in a classy way and had more classic English upbringing.

Her name's Delilah, why you ask? it was a name i thought was fitting, there are lots of well know Delilahs, and there mostly known as captivating women. There's Samsons Delilah, the temptress who was his downfall and betrayed him. (you know that story? where she cuts his hair and he loses his god like strength?) Songs like Tom Jones Delilah, about how he could see she was no good for him? It just seemed fitting.

She works as a Waitress, making small pay but its a social job which she enjoys the most.

Her birthday is 27th of March, 1991

Which makes her an Aries, known for there carefree, attention craving attitudes.

She's always flirty, fun and confident. She exudes confidence but doesn't come across as vain, that's something that stays hidden on her sinister side.

Her hobbies include

Slow bike rides, allowing her to ride passed others and catch there eye.

Attending Parties, and being the life of them. She has a knack for becoming centre of attention.

However what she doesn't realise is her lies are tampering with the red strings of fate she has made with the men, and how easily they can break.

Story:
We begin with a woman in a black room, all that can be seen is the red strings tied to her hands and fingers, which lead behind her and end attached to two men.The ties that shes made to them through romance.

Around her vanity table we see various pictures of her with various men, past lovers and boyfriends. Red flowers sit in a vase on the table. She walks over to her wardrobe, and opens the door. As it closes we see her in a changed outfit. In the reflection she smooths her hair and giggles, looks upward as she thinks of her two lovers.

We return to reality as we follow her downstairs and into the dining room, were we see a laid table for a meal, we watch as she adds the finishing touches, bringing in chinese to set down, a focus on her hand as she licks her fingers from the food and lights a candle.
'Ding dong' we hear the door bell ring, and just before she walks to the door, she notices and pulls off a fraying red tread from her top.
As she opens the door we cut to the black room, we see the 'Woman' facing one of the men, she looks at him and while laughing crooks her finger in front of her in a suggestive manner, thus pulling on the red string attached, which then pulls him forward. We cut back to the house scene as he steps through the door. As she leads him into the dining room the narration introduces him to us.
Then follows the date scene, sitting, eating the meal, light conversation, he takes her etc.
She then leans over to pick up a fortune cookie when the door bell rings again. Insisting the man goes to open the door, while 'Woman' sats at the table and cracks open the cookie.
Pulling out her fortune it reads '..........'
Cutting to the man opening the door we have narration all the while warns us to whats happening 'Now it gets interesting', and as the door opens were introduced to man number 2.
Standing at the door holding red roses with a grin on his face, it quickly falls as the two men look at each other with shocked expressions.
We cut back to the woman still sitting at the table, the two men walk through the door.
We fade into the abstract scene, the men are pulling on the red strings of fate, it starts to fray.
The strings break, and we see a pov of the 'Woman' , as she looks down to her hands, we see her look up to see the broken strings, and the men are gone.
